5 Tips to make the newborn days easier

Whether it’s your first baby or you’ve been there before, life with a newborn can be a whirlwind! Day blends into night, and there are so many demands on your time when you’re already exhausted. But there are things you can do to ease the strain, giving you more space to cherish those precious early days with your little one.

Set Some Visitor Rules

Friends and family will be desperate to meet your new arrival, but don’t underestimate the pressure of too many house calls. Think about it before the birth and discuss how much alone time you want as a new family first. And don’t be afraid to set limits: tell people you’re only up to a quick stop-in before the baby needs feeding again, or put them off to a different day if their timings don’t suit you. Forget about tidying up before they arrive and definitely don’t feel like you need to be the perfect hostess; they are there to see you and the baby not to be waited on hand and foot.

Food Prepping

If you get a chance before the birth, make some easy recipes in bulk and store them in the freezer, ready for when you get home. There are plenty of great options that work for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. When you’re doing the cooking, use the slow cooker to make things even easier, then you’re not standing over the oven all day. Also, get your husband or someone at home to do an online food shop and stock up on no-fuss, nutritious snacks like nuts, yoghurt, fresh fruit, cheese, hummus, and veggies.

Scheduling Activities

If you’ve got older children, then the more organised you are, the better. It’s helpful for everyone if their routines remain as normal as possible and you feel like there’s a plan to make sure they’re where they need to be. That way, you can also ask people for support where you need i.e. friends to share school/nursery drop off and pick up, or your partner to be involved in after-school activities. Don’t forget to schedule time for you to spend with other children one-on-one, so they don’t feel left out, even if it’s 20 minutes reading together or going out for ice cream.

Babywearing

There are lots of benefits associated with babywearing, including helping the bond develop and even easing symptoms of colic. Another big advantage is that wearing your baby in a sling gives you more freedom to move around with your hands free to get things done and carry on normal activities. It’s great when you’re out catching up with friends and it also makes it easier to breastfeed discreetly in public.

Practice With Your Gadgets

No, we don’t mean getting all the social media apps on your phone, although having something to scroll through before dawn can definitely help! We mean getting to grips with the various baby equipment so you feel completely comfortable using it when they arrive. Don’t let things like the steriliser gather dust in the box, get it out and put it together a few times; even if you plan to breastfeed, it’s always best to be prepared rather than running around frantically with a hungry baby if you do need it. The same goes for the buggy and the car seat; plenty of practice will make you feel a lot more confident!
