Although cord blood has many established FDA approved uses in transplant medicine, and has been used for many years, the choice to use it can only be determined by a physician. The decision whether the cord blood will be used will depend on a variety of factors. There is no guarantee that your physician will choose stem cell transplant over other courses of treatment. The use of cord blood in regenerative medicine is still being studied and there is no guarantee that potential medical applications being researched by scientists in clinical trials will become available. Cord tissue, placental tissue, cord vessel and amnion tissue uses are still in early research stages, and there is no guarantee that treatments using these sources will be available in the future. Tissues are stored whole. Additional processing prior to use may be required to extract and prepare any of the multiple cell types from cryopreserved tissues.
