What happens in the delivery room when you bank your baby’s cord blood?

Going into the hospital to give birth is a hugely exciting time, but it’s normal to feel uncertain, especially with your first pregnancy. Even with all of the preparation, you might not know what to expect and one of the most common questions we get asked about stem cell banking is how will it affect delivery. The answer? Not at all. The process is completely safe, non-invasive, and pain-free for both mother and baby, whether you have a natural delivery or a C-section.

What do I need to do?

Order your collection kit from CellSave and make sure to include it when you’re packing your hospital bag. It’s best to keep the kit out of direct sunlight at room temperature. At the time of delivery, give the kit to your doctor or midwife who will collect the cord blood and/or tissue sample.

How is the collection done?

After your little one is born, and before the placenta is delivered, the medical team will clamp the umbilical cord at both ends and cut it. The cord will be cleaned with an antiseptic and a needle is inserted into it to withdraw the blood. A few ounces of blood is taken and collected in a bag. The bag is sealed, labeled and packed in the kit; this whole process only takes a few minutes.

If umbilical cord tissue is also being collected this done immediately after cord blood collection. If placental tissue is being stored, then the placenta is disinfected after delivery and placed in a sterile bag; it will be processed, divided, and stored in the lab.

Once the collection has been done, call the number on your kit, so we can pick it up and transport it to our state-of-the-art facility in Dubai Healthcare City.

What happens next?

We receive and process stem cell collections every day of the year. These are then analysed by our experienced laboratory scientists for TNCs, CD34+/CD45 count, viability, bacteriology, fungal and infectious diseases. The precious stem cells from the cord blood are separated, purified and concentrated.

The stem cells are prepared for cryogenic storage and frozen using a method that protects them from any damage. We place the frozen stem cells in our cryotanks, containing liquid nitrogen at almost -196˚C. At this temperature, the cells remain perfectly preserved for decades.

Our high-tech system continuously monitors the frozen stem cells. If they are ever needed, we perform another round of quality checks before transporting them in cryogenic tanks to any transplant center in the world.
